The Z5 was ordered by the Leitz AG Wetzlar in 1950. Zuse implemented this machine with relays, as vacuum tubes were too unreliable at the time, causing more than 50 per cent downtime.


The Z5 construction followed the same principles as the Z4 did, however with a six-fold increase in speed. It also had multiple punch tape readers for conditional execution of subroutines.
